I’m reading a book on the American Revolution and came across this diary entry from John Adams

Kinja'd!!!

New Yorkers se emingly have a long tradition of being brash, loud, and obnoxious. :)

John Adams was a goddam gem. Where are men like him today? If you haven’t yet, you should read David McCullough’s biography of Adams. It’s fantastic. As I approached the end of the book, I was just hoping Adams wouldn’t die, like the badass hero of some adventure novel. Jefferson was kind of a prig, but Adams the the man .

If you happen upon a conversation about the subterranean transit you will hope to find the means to end ones life as it seems to be a topic of great disagreement . In spite of this you will not find disagreement a mong them as to the superiority of this city of theirs.

McCullough’s book is great, (and I think one of his best books too.)  From what I’ve read about him, Adams strikes me as kind of a d!ck, but largely for the right reasons - and sprinkle in a bit of hot temper.  But he could be super effective, especially with his wife mitigating his anger.  Jefferson seems to be more of a “1000 foot level” kinda guy.  Interesting ideas, including some bits of brilliance, but had trouble with the day to day nitty gritty details.

Have you read A Team of Rivals ? I have tried twice to get started on it and can’t quite. Right now I’m reading Dune , another story of political intrigue.

The HBO miniseries does him justice, IMO, for those of us with short attention spans.

no..  but his Path Between the Seas is fantastic as well.  Just finished Short Nights of the Shadow Cather about Edward R Curtis - also quite good.  Tortured man but his work is basically nearly the entire basis of all American native culture photography.

The brash, loud, and obnoxious parts yes, but no where did I say stupid and corrupt.
